Born at Roots Community Birth Center | Minneapolis, Minnesota | Repeat Family Birth Story

A Repeat Roots Family’s Experience

“In my first pregnancy in 2017, I was interested in out-of-hospital birth but my insurance carrier didn’t cover it at the time. I originally had care with an OB but switched to the hospital midwife team half way through. My intuition at prenatal visits with my OB just felt off- I didn’t feel like my wishes/preferences would ultimately be respected. Changing to the midwife team was an immediate improvement. My care felt more individualized. My birth would not have happened as it did (59 hour labor, unmedicated) without the care of the midwife team at the hospital. And yet, there were still aspects about birthing in a hospital that I did not like. I had a lingering curiosity for the out-of-hospital model of midwifery care.

When I got pregnant with our second, I checked with our insurance plan and was elated to find out that care was now covered at Roots Community Birth Center. From the very first prenatal visit, my care at Roots immediately felt like “home”. I felt so safe and truly informed in my health decisions. I never felt like a test or intervention was being done “to” me. Every aspect of care felt “with” me and with my informed consent. My second birth (first birth at Roots) was one of the best days of my life. Everything about my labor and birth made sense. I trusted my body and felt my natural birth process was honored and supported. My second birth was everything I dreamed of.

We decided to have a third and final baby, again at Roots. It was a no-brainer. My final pregnancy came with lots of anxiety (history of miscarriage and weird/concerning symptoms in the early trimesters)- the care I received from the midwives was truly exceptional. I always felt believed, and seen for everything I was going through emotionally and physically. They collaborated with specialists as needed to explore symptoms and make sure both me and baby were safe. Thankfully, things normalized in the third trimester and I was still completely safe to birth at Roots. Rachel was the midwife to catch my second baby- I was hopeful she would be there for my third baby, and she was!

I’m grateful to have been so well loved and cared for by the team at Roots through 2 pregnancies and births.” - Brittany Geisen, Roots Client
